So I have become somewhat of a book collector.  Currently all the books I have are stacked in piles in my closet.  But there are a couple books and sets of books that I’d like to have out on display.  Since I want to protect them from collecting dust, and from UV rays what I need is some sort of book display case.  I thought this would be a fairly easy thing to find.  There are lots of book collectors out there, right? And the all don’t like keeping their books locked away in drawers and closets, right? So why would it be hard to find a book display case?

Well it is. Its incredibly frustrating to find display cases for every piece of sports memorabilia out there, but not one meant for a book.  I’ve actually seen in a store a display case made specially for baseball hats that is molded in the shape of a hat, its craziness.

Anyway, this is my solution:
Michaels sells some decent display cases for Basketballs and Football Helmets.  The main problem with these is that the glass used has no UV coating so the books would be susceptible to sunning.  It turns out however that the glass Michaels sells in the framing department that are archival quality with UV coating fit quite nicely in the slots of the display cases.  The cases are fairly easy to disassemble so all you need to do is buy the case you want, take it apart, measure the glass pieces, have the framing department cut some UV coated pieces to the size you need, put them into the case and put it back together.  I did this with the helmet case and it turned out very well.  I paid $30 for the case (with a 50% off coupon) and about $150 for the UV coated glass.
